{"id":2186,"date":"2020-05-01T04:01:15","date_gmt":"2020-05-01T01:01:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hermes.aero\/?page_id=2186"},"modified":"2020-05-04T01:38:53","modified_gmt":"2020-05-03T22:38:53","slug":"2020-digitalization-ai-in-aviation-and-the-human-factor","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hermes.aero\/?page_id=2186","title":{"rendered":"2020 &#8211; Digitalization, AI in Aviation and the Human Factor"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\"  style='background-color: rgba(255,255,255,0);background-position: center center;background-repeat: no-repeat;padding-top:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0px;'><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row \"><div  class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion_builder_column_3_5  fusion-three-fifth fusion-column-first 3_5\"  style='margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:20px;width:60%;width:calc(60% - ( ( 4% ) * 0.6 ) );margin-right: 4%;'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper\" style=\"padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;\"  data-bg-url=\"\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"fusion-text\"><p>According to a White Paper prepared for the World Economic Forum, \u201cThere is widespread recognition among industry leaders that the role of digital technology is rapidly shifting, from being a driver of marginal efficiency to an enabler of fundamental innovation and disruption.\u201d\u00a0 The White Paper further notes that the aviation industry has been at the forefront of digital innovation, but that, \u201cfurther digitalization will be vital if the expectations of tomorrow\u2019s consumers are to be met.\u201d Along the same lines, a working paper prepared by the Singapore delegation to ICAO\u2019s Thirteenth Air Navigation Conference notes, \u201cThe growing pace of digital technological advancement provides opportunity to advance the global aviation industry, but is also a challenge that can disrupt the aviation industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Digitalization promises to increase efficiency and safety in the aviation industry, as well as to improve the customer experience. Integration across physical and digital assets, \u201cwill result in a seamless customer journey by making information available continuously, reducing waiting and transfer times, hyper-personalizing services and optimizing rerouting.\u201d Increasing the digitalization of assets will further facilitate predictive maintenance, as information is communicated on a real-time basis to control centers outlining required safety checks and repairs.<\/p>\n<p>Building on these digital advancements, artificial intelligence (AI) offers the opportunity to learn from experience: \u201cThe differentiating factor of an AI system from a standard software system is the characteristic ability to learn, improve, and predict.\u201d According to a recent report by McKinsey &amp; Company, \u201cMachines powered by AI can today perform many tasks\u2014such as recognizing complex patterns, synthesizing information, drawing conclusions, and forecasting\u2014that not long ago were assumed to require human cognition\u2026 After decades of false starts, artificial intelligence is on the verge of a breakthrough&#8230; Tech giants and digital natives are investing in and deploying the technology at scale, but widespread adoption among less digitally mature sectors and companies is lagging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pace of change in aviation from digitalization and AI is fast and accelerating, with almost every aspect being impacted \u2013 not just greater autonomy in the air in aircraft and other airspace vehicles and in air traffic management but also on the ground for operations, security and the passenger experience. Clearly, increased use of digitalization and AI in the aviation industry will disrupt the current workforce. Although, some jobs will be lost with workers replaced by technology, many more workers will need to be retrained to accommodate the new technologies: \u201cDigital transformation demands a different skill set from workers in today\u2019s economy, and will create new types of jobs\u2026 Challenges such as managing the impact of automation on employment, reskilling the industry workforce for the digital economy, and creating a safety net for workers in a flexible workforce, will need to be tackled collaboratively by industry, regulators and policy-makers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In this context, Hermes invites interested stakeholders to submit papers on the following topics:<\/p>\n<p>1. What changes are needed to ensure that aviation proactively embraces digitalization and AI in a way that ensures continued safety, security and sustainability? Are current arrangements with ICAO (regulations, standards, etc) and industry associations (industry standards, benchmarking, sharing of best practices, etc) adequate or is there a need for more explicit leadership in aviation and, if so, by whom?<\/p>\n<p>2. What policies and regulations need to be instituted, altered or removed to ensure successful implementation of digitalization and AI in aviation? Is a performance-based approach to human involvement and to regulation sufficient or is there a need to be more prescriptive on when human involvement and management is essential?<\/p>\n<p>3. Digitalization and AI will reduce the cognitive load on humans but will also have a significant impact on the need for human time and resources. How can aviation best anticipate and manage that impact?
